Aquaponics is an organic sustainable food production system that combines aquaculture with hydroponics in a symbiotic environment. In the aquaponic system fish waste supplies an organic food source for the hydroponically grown plants. Nitrifying bacteria and composting red worms in the growing media help convert the ammonia in the fish waste to nitrates and solids which serve as vermicompost for the plants. The plants utilize the nutrients and the purified waste water is then returned back to the fish.
